• Count how many steps you currently have.
• Measure the total vertical rise from bottom to top — this gives you a good starting point.

• Measure from the top of the dune down to where you want the steps to end.
• If the slope is too long or steep to measure directly, stretch a long rope or tape from top to bottom, mark it, then measure the rope length — this gives you the stringer length.

• The Total Rise (vertical height), or
• The Stringer Length (diagonal slope)
